Quick answer: divide your shoulder circumference by your waist. The average man scores about 1.26; above 1.35 looks athletic, and 1.618 (the golden ratio, or Adonis index) is the classic ideal.

What Is the Shoulder-to-Waist Ratio?

The shoulder-to-waist ratio compares the circumference of your shoulders with the circumference of your waist. A higher number means broader shoulders over a narrower waist: the V-shaped upper body that many men train for. It is often called the Adonis index, with the golden ratio of 1.618 as the ideal.

Same shoulders, four waists: ratios from 1.10 to the golden ratio of 1.618.

The ratio is about appearance, not health. A good ratio and a healthy waist often go together, though: shrinking the waist improves both. For a health check, use the waist-to-height ratio.

The average comes from the U.S. Army ANSUR II survey (median 1.26, middle half 1.18–1.34). Soldiers are leaner than average, so civilian men usually score lower: the average U.S. man has a 40.6 inch waist (see average waist size for men).

Reaching 1.618 usually takes both broad shoulders and a lean waist. Because the waist is the smaller number, cutting it has a bigger effect: losing 2 inches of waist raises the ratio about as much as adding 2.5–3 inches of shoulder circumference.

Chest-to-Waist Ratio

The chest-to-waist ratio uses chest circumference instead of shoulders. It shows a similar V shape but reacts more to chest muscle and less to shoulder width. For men, about 1.1 shows a moderate taper, 1.25 a clear V shape and 1.4 a muscular build. Our body proportions calculator works it out alongside waist-to-hip and leg-length ratios.

How to Measure Shoulders and Waist

  1. Measure your shoulders. Stand relaxed with arms at your sides. Have someone wrap a tape around the widest part of your shoulders and upper arms, over the deltoids, keeping it level.
  2. Measure your waist. Wrap the tape around your waist at the navel, level with the floor, after a normal breath out. Do not suck in.
  3. Divide. Divide the shoulder measurement by the waist measurement, using the same unit for both.
  4. Add your chest (optional). Measure around the fullest part of the chest under the arms to get chest-to-waist ratio as well.

Note that shoulder circumference is different from shoulder width measured straight across the back. For width, see average shoulder width.

Shoulder-to-Waist Ratio for Women

Women’s shoulders are narrower and their waists sit higher, so the same numbers mean different things. Large surveys do not publish this ratio for women, and bust, waist and hip measurements describe a woman’s shape better. A high shoulder-to-waist ratio for a woman usually points to an inverted triangle or hourglass shape; check yours with the body shape calculator.

How to Improve Your Shoulder-to-Waist Ratio

Lose waist fat: a modest calorie deficit with enough protein trims the waist while keeping muscle. See where you are on the body fat percentage chart.

Build the shoulders and back: overhead presses and lateral raises widen the deltoids; pull-ups and rows widen the upper back. Train them two or three times a week and add weight over time.

Check the result: try different shoulder and waist sizes in the 3D body visualizer, or see which build you have with the male body type calculator.

Shoulder-to-Waist Ratio FAQ

What is a good shoulder-to-waist ratio?

For men, the average shoulder-to-waist ratio is about 1.26 (shoulder circumference divided by waist at the navel). A ratio above about 1.35 looks athletic, above 1.45 is a strong V-taper, and 1.618, the golden ratio, is the classic aesthetic ideal.

What is the golden ratio for shoulders to waist?

The golden ratio is 1.618. Applied to the body, it means a shoulder circumference 1.618 times the waist. With a 32 inch waist, that is about 51.8 inch shoulders. The idea is popularly called the Adonis index.

How do I calculate my shoulder-to-waist ratio?

Measure around your shoulders at the widest point and around your waist at the navel, in the same unit. Divide the shoulder number by the waist number. For example, 48 ÷ 36 = 1.33.

What is the average shoulder-to-waist ratio for men?

In the U.S. Army ANSUR II survey, the median man had a shoulder-to-waist ratio of about 1.26, with the middle half between 1.18 and 1.34. Only about 5% exceeded 1.46. Civilian men, who have larger waists on average, typically score lower.

What is a good chest-to-waist ratio?

For men, a chest at least 1.2 to 1.3 times the waist gives a visible V shape, and around 1.4 looks muscular. For women, bust and waist are better compared with the hips, which is what body shape calculators do.

Is shoulder-to-waist ratio the same as the Adonis index?

Yes. The Adonis index is a popular name for the shoulder-to-waist ratio, usually with the golden ratio of 1.618 as the target. It is a measure of looks, not of health.

How can I improve my shoulder-to-waist ratio?

Reduce the waist by losing body fat, and build the shoulders and upper back with overhead presses, lateral raises, pull-ups and rows. Losing 2 inches of waist changes the ratio about as much as adding 2.5 inches of shoulder circumference.

Does shoulder-to-waist ratio matter for women?

It matters less. For women, the relationship between bust, waist and hips describes shape better. A shoulder-to-waist ratio well above the average often goes with an inverted triangle or hourglass shape.
